On Friday night a fanatical group of owners ascended on Moonee Valley with their progressive stayer Vadaboy lining up in the 2500m BM64. His work during the week had been very good and their was high hopes for a big performance.
He jumped cleanly from the good barrier and was able to settle into a nice rhythm just off the speed. With the pace slackening, jockey Blaike McDougall eased out at the 1200m mark and took up the running. As Blaike had told us after his previous start, he was keen to get rolling on this horse early and make it a real staying test which is exactly what he did. He had his rivals off the bit chasing a long way out and powered away for a comfortable win.
It is a fantastic reward for his owners who kept the faith throughout the preparation which has now been capped off with a city win. He’ll go for a break now before we bring him back for a Winter campaign where we expect him to go to another level again.
Simon loves training stayers like Vadaboy, Winds of March and Duke of Hastings and recent results are telling us that if you’re patient with your staying horses, you’ll be rewarded. We’ve just been to the New Zealand Karaka 2023 sale and picked up a few lovely staying types so please don’t hesitate to contact the stable to get involved.
