It was an exciting Melbourne Cup day for the owners of Ribchester colt Krakarib as he embarked on his group race debut in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate yesterday at Flemington.
Expectations were high after an unlucky first up run down the straight and the horse had clearly improved physically from that performance.
After receiving instructions along the lines of ‘let fast horses be fast’ from Simon, jockey Damien Thornton was able to get the speedy colt off to a flying start from the inside barrier. Whilst setting a strong enough tempo to break the hearts of those behind him, he was able to settle really nicely in the run. When the pressure came on late in race there was only really one challenger in the Linsday Park silks, but little Krakarib dug deep and pulled away again on the line for an enormous win and one that the Donald’s Racing team will never forget.
Congratulations to Donald’s Racing and their wonderful ownership group. It’s an amazing achievement to get a Group winner from your first crop of yearlings purchased and to be able to do it with this horse, who we have grown to love so much means a lot to the stable as well.
Krakarib will now have a little freshen at Linc Sullivan’s and return for a tilt at the Group 1 Blue Diamond. He has a very deep pedigree is now a valuable colt and we can’t wait to see what’s in store over the next 6 months for little Tony.
