There were emotional scenes yesterday at Kilmore after Zacinto gelding Italian Poet finally put to bed his maiden after 10 ten starts. The First Light owned three year old was able to break through after showing a lot of promise early in his career but always seemed to find one better on the day.
After they jumped, Italian Poet got into the perfect position a pair behind the leader and was travelling sweetly despite the pace in front being quite steady. Jockey Damien Thornton took the initiative and pulled out at the 650m to make his run. On the bend, he’d put the race away and was eased down on the line to win by 1.75L. He still floated a little once in front, but the blinkers certainly aided him in getting the job done.
Congratulations to First Light Racing and their owners and we look forward to seeing Italian Poet put a couple of nice wins together as he stretches further out in trip.
