The day had arrived for talented Ocean Park gelding Oceans Above to deliver on the promise he’d shown us from day one, and he did just that in spectacular fashion. Jumping from a wide gate, jockey Harry Coffey was forced to take his medicine and go back to last. The speed was on early, with leader Simeon setting a nice tempo allowing Oceans Above to relax nicely on the bridle. At the top of the straight, spotting the leader a good dozen lengths, Harry was able to steer out to the centre of the track and build through his gears. The Flemington straight was really to Oceans Aboves liking, launching down the outside to finish with a flurry and mow down the brave Simeon and take out his first win in metropolitan grade.
A big thank you to all of the owners who have been patient with this horse. He’s still far from the finished product and we’ll see a better horse again next preparation but he’d shown us so much talent and we knew a win like this wasn’t far away. Well done to Nick and Charlotte who have been riding him in preparation and special mention to strapper Erwin who, on his first day strapping at Flemington, produced a winner.
We will return to Flemington with him on the 3rd June where he will step up to the 2000m, a trip where we think he will be doing his best work as he gets older.
